NetMap 2.1

Publisher Description

The NetMap project was started by students at Networks and Distributed Systems at Aalborg University in Denmark, and is still developed and run by students and researchers at Aalborg University.
The project forms the basis for several student projects, and has lead to a number of scientific publications.

NetMap is a crowd sourcing based measurement system for measuring the performance of mobile network connections (2G, 3G and 4G). The goal is to map how the users experience the connection from their devices to the Internet.
Today it can be difficult to say why a user experience a poor connection. It can be due to the device, the network coverage, the network load, the load on the device from other apps, etc..
This is what we seek to uncover by doing measurements of the connection to see how the connection performs. Together with these measurements we collect a wide range of additional information, such as location, time, device model, network and much more.
With all this information we can analyze the measurements of the connection from many angles, and try to uncover what is the cause of a measured quality in a given situation. This knowledge can be used by users to select device model and network, and by network providers in identifying problems.
